We know it all, we are always right, we have all the answers, we can never be wrong. We think that we are the center of the universe. That makes us arrogant and self-centered people. The problem here, simply put, is that we are sinners.

We all are blind when you really get right down to it. However, what makes all the difference is realizing your true state. Notice that both of these groups are blind. Our Lord says that there are basically two kinds of people - those who were blind and realize it, and those who think they can see but are actually blind. The same thing holds true for us about our spiritual blind spots. You’d better look over your shoulder and check, before you change lanes or make any kind of move in traffic. Listen: When you’re driving a car, you had better be aware of the blind spots behind you. But they had a spiritual blind spot when it came to Jesus. They should have been glad that God has sent to us his Messiah to save us. The Pharisees should have been jumping for joy that a blind man could now see. God had just performed a tremendous miracle through his Son, and still, these religious leaders could not see it. The truth was the Pharisees had spiritual blind spots - they could not see what God was doing in Christ. Our Lord even said to them, “I have come, so that those who do not see, may see, and that those who think they see, will realize they are blind.” And revealing their arrogance and pride, the Pharisees responded to Jesus by saying, “What? Are we also blind?” However, in all of this wrangling over keeping the Sabbath, they revealed they had a blind spot where Jesus was concerned. In their eyes, that made him a false Messiah. They said that because Jesus healed on the Sabbath, this proved he was not sent by God. And in the aftermath of that miracle, the Pharisees tried to find a legal technicality to delegitimize what Jesus had done for this blind man. The irony is that Christ had just healed a man who was born blind. Our Lord refers to the Pharisees as being blind. Today, we hear Jesus talk about blind spots. It is physically impossible to see everything at once. This means you have to turn your head and look over your shoulder before you change lanes.īlind spots are created because we do not have eyes in the back of our heads. You have blind spots on the right back and left back corners of your car. If you’re driving in a car and are relying on your rearview mirrors to check the lanes behind you, there are some spots that you still won’t be able to see. They turned out to be good drivers, but along the way, I experienced a lot of tense moments of almost running over mailboxes, almost swerving into oncoming traffic, almost running through stop signs they didn’t see.Īnd I remember I spent a lot of time talking about “blind spots.” You know what a blind spot is.
